What the Cancer Research UK Schools SunSmart Campaign says...

Spend time in the shade between 11am - 3pm is one of the key SunSmart messages. This is because the sun's UV rays are strongest between these hours. Children and young people are often outside during the middle of the day, so providing sufficient shade for the outdoor spaces in schools is very important.

UV rays are invisible and cannot be felt on the skin. They penetrate deeply into the skin's cells, causing changes that lead to sunburn, skin ageing, eye damage and skin cancer.

Young skin is delicate and very easily damaged by the sun. All children, no matter whether they tan easily or not should be protected from the sun. Experts believe that sunburn during childhood can significantly increase the risk of skin cancer later on in life. Some say the chances of developing skin cancer are doubled by just one blistering sunburn by the age of 20.
